In your last post you said:

My answer is: Not necessarily. Of course, the string tension jumps will
be a little greater, but there are many pianos of good reputation which
are strung with only whole size wire. The Baldwin Acrosonic is one 
which comes to mind (although it does have problems in the tenor 
area, it still sounds good thoughout the mid and treble areas). Many 
of us feel that we can improve a situation like you mention by rescaling
with half sizes, but it is only marginal.
