I once had a string break about five hours before a concert for which I was unable to attend. I pulled the new one about a semi-tone sharp and worked it down to pitch using a string stretcher. The next morning the string was still in tune, however it was false and had a funny-inharmonic tone which always made it a challenging unison. I eventually replaced it again which solved the problem.-Mike Jorgensen.
