I have been curious about the tapering/overlap of double (and single)
wound strings for some time and having only ever had one 1/2 day
encounter with a PROFESSIONAL (Full time - trained by his father)
String Winder a few years ago I still don't really understand the
ramifications of some points of design (if they are really designed -
rather than just made to measure).

I would like to know/understand:

1) What is the optimum free distance to the termination (bridge
pin/agreff) ?
2) What amount/proportion of Overlap should be applied with double
wound strings ?
3) What are the possible effects of wrong "Free Distance" ?
4) What are the possible effects of improper "Overlap" ?

AlanD (hoping that the TERMS I have adopted can be understood)

PS - The thread on Inharmonicity is perhaps the MOST interesting I
have seen on Piano-T.
