Dear David,

If you consider that Mozart, et al, composed music on their instruments
and not for modern instruments then forte pianos are valid for
performing their works on forepians. 

Consider that those instruments have much shorter sustain than modern
pianos, the bass was much brighter in the higher harmonics, the touch
was much shallower and the actions very fast.  All these factors will
have an effect upon interpritation and performance of the music makes
the exploration of the portepianos strengths and weaknesses worthwhile.
After all, the composers knew nothing of the coming changes in pianos.
