Greetings, 
   The Steinway needling procedure, as shown by Fred Drasche,  was to  insert
a needle, about 1/2" long,  directly down into the heart of the hammer from
the strike point.  It works on Steinway hammers that were originally voiced at
the factory.  Rarely is more than two or three stabs needed.
