If memory serves, during the crusades, Janissaries were Christian converts to Islam (usually captured children or disgruntled, hungry crusaders) who were employed as soldiers against the crusaders. They wore characteristic uniforms which included a bizarre headgear and were reported to be particularly fierce fighters. And the pay was better. Steve
