Larry,

I am a former engineer and an active ham radio operator.  Your info on
NICADs is good.  Run 'em till they stop (completely discharged)..charge
them for the specified amount of time, and then use them.

If you are using batteries that are not manufactured by the same outfit
as the charger, charging time may need to be calculated.  Not really too
hard, but even I have to think about it a little.

A real nifty battery is the gel-cell.  It is like a lead acid battery
with an electrolyte like jelly.  It doesn't leak and is very forgiving
of mistreatment. However, it comes is large cell sizes...no AA, C, or D
sizes.
