Quality vs. quantity. Certainly the overall size of the waveform would
attenuate by putting the lid down. But the main effect (to my ears at
least) is on the "VHF" content of the tone, ie. the tone color which
doesn't contribute much to the "mass" of the sound. 1db sounds reasonable
to me.
