Hi James, Technically speaking a soundboard is a transducer i.e. it transfers one form of vibrational energy to another. Yes, you can here the sound better--but in terms of actual energy content there is less *total* energy. There it does the opposite of a true amplifer. The same was true of the old edison type mechanical cylinder players--the horn was a transducer not an amplifer.
