Hi Steve, Our University is the proud owner of a SET of Amati's, the first violin is fabulous the second so so, The Viola was cut down about 200 years ago for some unknown reason. But the Cello is to die for, it has a sound that haunts me every time I voice a piano at ppp from the mid range down, I would just love to hear this instrument in the hands of one of the greats. I agree with you, in that it's impossible to make a comparison, given the loading placed on a pianos S.B. Regards Roger llow any direct comparison. I recently played a Maggini violin, a Gaspar da Salo viola , and an Andrea Amati 'cello, all from the late 1500's. The violin and viola were glorious. Strong voiced, responsive and carried well. The cello was as dead as the proverbial doornail. why? Who knows. Roger Jolly Baldwin Yamaha Piano Centre Saskatoon and Regina Saskatchewan, Canada. 306-665-0213 Fax 652-0505
