<< Dear List,
Tuned a newer Baldwin studio yesterday and noticed a white powdery
substance around the coils and down a ways toward the windings. It wasn't on
the windings or at the hitch pin end. Mostly in the bass section and up a
short way into the tenor. When I ran a finger across it, it wasn't totally
dry but was slightly sticky. Any ideas?

 Thanks,

When you unpack a box of tuning pins, there is a residue of white talc, to
keep the pins dry. When they string pianos, they use talc to keep fingers dry.
With high humidity, talc will tend to feel sticky.
