Nothing other than the sanding marks left by the disc sander when the tails
were contoured. If the rep lever spring is right, the tails are shaped
properly, and the backcheck height and angle are close to correct, the
hammers should check just fine without roughening, and won't chew the
backcheck leather up in the process. That's been my experience.
