By mentioning this you may have saved someone else from doing this.

It would appear the tuning pin setter you were using was rested on the coil
and string, rather than on top of the tuning pin which is what it's
supposed to effect.  Yes, no?

Hopefully you quit when the first string broke and discovered this.
