Wanted to present another view.  First and foremost, it's always a
judgement call based on one's experience with such things and the
particulars of each situation.

I've had excellent results bolstering knuckle sets that have flattening
through use.  No need to replace unless the leather is worn, wasted, and/or
the inner core is shot.  Currently I am using a yarn material and an
uphostery needle to thread the yarn.  Have even used dental floss.
