Mathushek designed some interesting pianos. He was quite free with rib placement, producing a variety of patterns from all vertical to all horizontal to various radial dispersions. He built pianos with laminated soundboards in the 1880's. He built pianos without pinblocks -- a thick web with approximately 7/16" holes containing laminate plugs. I looked at a nine foot grand using these plugs that was still quite tunable after 100 years of use. This piano also had its straight side along the treble with the bass side bent in the "normal" manner. Your inquirer might want to check the US Patent files for more information.
