why strings break.

Hello
      I seem to recall reading in the PTJ sometime ago that poorly
shaped flat hammers shaped like Frankensteins head will break more
strings because of the large striking area.  This sets up a diffent wave
pattern on the string which breaks more at the bearing points.  True?
