Ken; It depends on whether you are talking about verdigris "green goop" or 
Emeralon "green goop" :-)

 In the former instance, yes an excess (read any) verdigris will cause 
degradation of action function. In the latter it is probably the 'lack' of 
emeralon that is causing the problem, i.e. the coating of Emeralon has 
probably rubbed through and the spring is riding on bare , grooved, wood. A 
'light' coating of graphite will do wonders here if the Emeralon is present.
 If verdigris is the problem, clean spring and groove with 
alcohol/acetone/naptha, regraphite and you are ready to go.
