Pianos made before WW II were assembled by masters of the art who did all the action assembly and installation themselves. Errors were made but less often than later. In many factories the actions are pre assembled and installed to fit the case. At S&S NY the action is assembled to fit a particular case without regard to geometry in exact detail, hence errors can occur. Capstan dislocation is a common problem. Even .5 mm can have a drastic effect on touch weight. Keys that chuck also cause such problems. Newton
