Do you mind if I interrupt with my own answer? After all, it is me who is
responsible of all this discussion. :-) I wanted to make a private reply
and didn't know the original line was coming from the pianotech list. Sorry
for all this folks!
The battery pack consists of 4 AA type cells. I guess you can use any kind
of rechargeable AA batteries you can buy at the store. I took the
industrial brand (the blue ones with "tongues" on each end). They are
presumably more efficient than the common models.
Concerning the suitability of mixing old and new batteries, I don't know. I
must admit I am not a specialist. I have two battery packs of different
"age" on my portable and I have never seen that drain effect. May be there
is some, maybe it's minimal. There is something I am very positive about
though: the battery life is now definitively longer on my SAT than a brand
new one.
The idea of a switch did come through my mind but, why bother. If you want
a backup power device, I like very much the idea I saw on this list few
years ago. It consists of simply pluging a battery pack into the charger
jack at the back.
