I am not an RPT but have lurked this list for quite a while and are very interested in all of your conversations. Since then, I have such an appreciation for the RPT that tunes my piano. Just two weeks ago, I bought a used Steinway 1098 upright (serial# traced to the year 1989 - about 10 years old). It has a Mahogany finish, everything looks very good during the inspection. Only one C string was missing (#45) and Steinway is sending the part. I negotiated $8500 for it at the local Piano dealer here in Orlando, Florida. I think I had a "fair" deal since I have been researching the going "used" price for the 1098s on the internet. The dealer also threw in a NEW Steinway-Warrantee for 5 years (and a couple of the usual free tunings.) However, from the discussion here in the past, many RPTs have complained about the difficulty of tuning the 1098. Some even suggesting that it is an "average" upright for an overbuilt piano. I am in no disagreement with the tuning difficulty of it. But how can you judge the averageness of it just because it is hard to tune! Everything of the 1098 is meticulously detailed and hand crafted. Quality shows throughout the whole piano. Regards, John Nguyen Redfj40@worldnet.att.net
