It was going on in the 30's (and possibly earlier -- piano historians??) when American Aeolian was buying up the name rights to dozens of major and minor piano manufacturers, culminating in all sorts of awful spinets and consoles coming out of their Memphis plant with decals of once acceptable (e.g., Henry F. Miller) brands, and severely downgraded versions of once fine instruments (e.g., Mason & Hamlin, Knabe) from the E. Rochester factory. The Koreans and Chinese are merely guilty (in this case) of imitating the standard business practices of the US piano industry. Patrick draine
