Hi Les,
Other's have given enough good commments on the pin block problem.
By all means change the bass strings, you will find a big improvement in
consistency, power and tonal quality, if you use the services of a good
string maker. I have restrung the bass on quite a number of fairly new
Samick grands with dramatic results.
As a generality, just reshape the bass hammers, and listen to the tonal
difference of the bi cords, (after string mating) this will give you a good
indication of the quality of the exsisting strings.
