Tripping, (was METHOD)

Hi all,

When it came time to regulate that Kimball grand in my shop, I tried out a
couple of things to see what I could get away with. I had been careful
choosing action parts, and I think I improved the geometry a little,
without going to great lengths of re-engineering to do so, and the touch
weights showed up just where I'd expect.

Regulating, I started with a 9.5mm, 0.370" dip, and determined the blow
distance and let off from that to arrive at a let off in the neighborhood
of 3/32" bass, to 1/16" treble range. I arrived at what I thought was
minimal dependable aftertouch (by feel), drop (by feel), making minor dip
or let off adjustments to even everything out.

Everyone who has played it has commented on how quick, responsive, and
controllable it is, even at ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp, which it
will just about do with these hammers. <G>

Normally, I'd probably have had a little more dip, and a little more
aftertouch, and have produced an action that was quite usable, but not
particularly extraordinary. I know action geometry, weights and friction
will have considerable bearing on what can be done with regulation, but,
like I said, I was exploring. Now I have to figure out where I got lucky,
why, and how to do it again next time. Looks like it's time to broaden my
frontiers again.
