Diapason piano

At the college we have a very talented Japanese student. Yesterday whe was
telling me about her pianos at home. One is a Diapason, which is Kawai,
but I don't think they are sold here. She was told my the salesma that
they are "hand-made". Can anyone tell me what makes a Diapason different
from a Kawai? She says it says Diapason on the fallboard, not Kawai.
