Some info for your consideration:
I wouldn't necessarily try to close the gap completely.  Bringing it back
some with some type of rigid spacer in the opening could be acceptable.
What amount you do accomplish will be retained and prevented from moving
either direction from that time on.  Those Hamiltons are hardy pianos and
can take an amazing amount of abuse.

If the your repair stablizes the situation, three passes ought to get you
back to A440 for a final tuning.
