Hi, Terry:

I went with the largest carriage bolt I could get into the plate hole without
drilling the plate - that might have been 3/8". I use a thick oversize
washer on the plate side that grabs the plate - I think it a 1/2" washer.
Sometimes I have to file an edge of the washer if there is plate or tuning
pin interference. This is particularly true when you have to use a screw
hole which is not along the upper plate flange.

Thanks for the assurance about lunch - I was mortified, as you can tell. But
you guys were really great to hang out with - hope to see you again!

<< Hi Bill. Thanks for the input. No, I have not done this repair yet. The
piece of hardwood for the carriage bolt stability sounds like a winner. Ron
 N. suggested using 3/8" dia. bolts. The 8 counter-sunk-headed plate screws
along the top of the plate that I will be replacing with the thru-bolts were
5/16" dia. Do you think the nut on the plate side of the carriage bolt will
sit alright covering the counter-sunk feature in the plate? Oh, and hey,
 lunch was cool!
