I managed to get to my 48th year with out glasses, but scar tissue on the Retina from my youth, and the natural aging process was the primary explination given for the nned of glasses. An off hand comment from the Doc, " Count your blessongs you got pass 40 with out them" I like your idea of lying on the lid to do the capstans, always wanted to lay down on the job.
