pin driving fluid

Several of you have reported improved tuning pin "feel" when using
varnish on the tuning pin before driving.

I am commencing stringing a S & S "L" and thought I'd try it out.  I have
just a few quick questions..

1.  Is the varnish used at full brushing viscosity, or thinned?
2.  Is just the tip of the pin wetted with the varnish, or more of the
shaft  wiped with it?
3.  ANY varnish will do the deed?
