String splicing

 Yep, but  guess what, it don't work quite the way he says.  The loops are
right, but I have never been able to get the  "new leader to rotate in the
direction of the arrow" and have the loops line up right.  With real thick
wire you have to bend the loops so they slide up and down on each other
easily.    It takes practice, and when it finally comes time to tie a
splice, you are out of practice.   Photocopy the illustration and tuck it
away in your tool box among your over size leader stock.
And this is just one way, I have seen on rare occasions (or perhaps only
one) a splice done as a square knot.  Does anyone know how to do this
