Hi Richard,
                 I experimented with this before the linen cloth, and it
worked fine.  With practice you get to know the cloth. (how wet or damp)
and can almost predict the result.  The  tip of the iron becomes very
precise in locating where you want the steam to be active.
Using the iron inverted will also target a zone of the hammer accurately.
Two curved surfaces just touching.
