Hi Terry (I like the name!). I just ran into that yesterday on a Baldwin
grand. Plugging with a dowel is great (best is with a plug). Be CAREFUL not
to drill too far ;-). Yesterday, I just jammed two thin pieces of walnut
veneer into the stripped hole, and broke them off to the depth of the hole.
I then removed them, sprayed the hole interior with CA accellerator, put a
bunch of thick CA glue on the two shims, jammed them into the hole and
screwed the rascal together. You can always break a screw free from CA, even
if it has not hardened before you put the screw in. If you are not
comfortable with that, spay some mold release on the screw and turn it in
for a minute until the glue sets. Works great, takes only two minutes, and
no extra tools.
