In baseball, the goal posts (uprights) are called the foul line poles, and 
the bar is the top of the outfield fence or wall.  As in American 
"football", one of the objects of the game is to get the ball between the 
uprights and above the bar.

The other objective is to travel 360 feet around a square which has safety 
squares at each corner.  The batter is outnumbered 9:1, and if a ball is 
hit which fails to clear the wall but stays accessible, the nine  can work 
together to stop the batter's (now referred to as the runner's) progress if 
they catch him or her between those safety zones.  Should the runner run 
that gauntlet successfully and get all the way around the square, the score 
of his team is increased by one.

Many other things in the game, of course, but most Americans are quite 
befuddled by cricket and it's scores like 287-3. ;-}
