While it seems 99% likely that your hand numbness comes from the physical 
work you do, it doesn't hurt to remember that neuropathy is also one of the 
commonest and earliest signs of diabetes. It usually will show up in the 
feet first, though.

Type II diabetes is extremely common and getting more common all the time 
among people entering middle age. If you have any doubts at all about 
whether you are at risk, a doctor can order you an A1c blood test, which 
will show your average level of blood glucose for the past several months.

Also, smoking can reduce peripheral circulation.
