Spring steel

I need to replace a underlever spring in a Steinway M I'm rebuilding.  Let's
just say it got mangled somehow...;-/.  I measured the diameter at .029 or
14.5 in piano wire.  Couldn't I use this instead of spring steel, whatever
that is?  I have a nifty little spring making tool I got at a chapter tool
auction and some brass spring making wire but it is a lighter gauge than the
original.  Any info would be appreciated.
