Tom, The iPaq does not come with a built-in database any more than the Palm does. Third party software is still necessary if you want to use something other than the note section of the Outlook calendar. As I have written in the past, Pendragon Forms is quite good for using Access on the Palm. (There are similar programs for the Pocket PC, but not nearly as good yet.) No program exists which will take an already completed Access database and simply transfer it to the Palm or the Pocket PC platforms. A bit of tweaking is necessary and will involve a third piece of software to make the whole thing work smoothly. As of this spring, when I did my last research for our Pacific Northwest Conference, I believe there are still only the few programs which will do this for the Palm and Pendragon Forms still looks like the most user friendly and the best of the lot. I bought an iPaq 3635 and am trying really hard to like it. After using (and loving) Palms for over 5 years I am having a hard time liking the iPaq. Interestingly, most previous Palm users have had similar reactions as mine. First-time users, with nothing else to compare it to, love it! But Dean is committed to putting the CyberTuner on a hand-held computer and this looks like the best one to him. I just hope it will have enough power to last through a day of tuning. When I used it for taking notes in classes in Reno, the battery needed recharging after half a day. I have spoken to Compaq and am sending it back for them to check out. If they determine that is normal battery life when used continuously for an hour or so at a time, then Dean will hopefully be making some modifications in the use of power of his program. I hope this if of value to you. jeannie Jeannie Grassi, RPT Associate Editor, Piano Techncians Journal mailto:jgrassi@silverlink.net -----Original Message----- From: owner-pianotech@ptg.org [mailto:owner-pianotech@ptg.org]On Behalf Of Tom Servinsky Sent: Friday, August 03, 2001 4:38 AM To: pianotech@ptg.org Subject: Re: software suggestions Scott, Thanks for the "heads up". The Compaq has been discussed from time to time on this list and it does intrigue to have everything in one neat device. At this point in juncture me big problem it I already have the Palm, so my attention is centered around working with present conditions. The other part which scares about the Compaq are the idiots who carry them, like me, who have a habit of putting them in their front pocket and bend over, sending them crashing to the floor. I just broke the glass on my Palm and cost a whopping $100 plus down time to get it fixed. The thought of my tuning computer and schedulizer being caput in one move frightens the tar out of me.
