Try using Wenol or Flitz instead; the ammonia content isn't as high, and the 
polish, or removal of striation (as well as the removal of material which is 
the same anyway), is less. Actually, under a microscope (which we have here 
in the shop) Wenol leaves a finer surface than Flitz. The same on damper 
wires.
