He cooks the old dowel dry with a resistance hearing cord (used to thaw frozen water pipes in the "real" world). The desiccated and shrunken dowel is then driven out and a pre-desiccated replacement is driven back in. As the replacement absorbs humidity, it clamps itself in the tube. Then you drill the holes and reassemble. You can do it yourself, or send the stack to John and let him worry about it. Ron N
