Yeah, I think your question is a good one. Very often, because some =
things are difficult to change, and don't get changed unless there is a =
pressing reason - like KR - one will conclude that there is no =
difference between the two choices, but what one really means is that =
you can work with either one - but, one may be more preferable. My guess =
is that you are going to be better off with the ideal KR (of .50?) and =
adjusting the knuckle or other parameter as needed (pure guess though). =
I'd sure like to follow through how this shakes out though.

Terry:
This came up in a thread awhile ago in which Stanwood participated. I =
had inquired about a problem with a Steinway action. I was just =
becoming familiar with David's system. Bill Ballard at one point =
commented at one point (to paraphrase), what's the difference if it's a =
.55 key ratio and a 17 mm knuckle or a .50 ratio and a 16 mm knuckle, =
none really. In practice it seems that there is no difference. The =
larger arc scribed by the capstan with a KR of .55 is compensated for by =
the smaller arc scribed by the 17mm knuckle and vice versa. Well now, =
given the opportunity to make a choice by moving the balance rail, I'm =
wondering if there is a benefit to one over the other.

Have you considered consulting with David Stanwood? Just a thought. =
I'm sure he would be an expert with this. Please let us know what you do =
and how it works out. Very interested in something like this. What an =
opportunity to improve/tweak the action.

Anybody still out there?
I am having a set of new keys made for an 1899 S&S model A. I =
have a choice of relocating the balance rail to set up the key ratio =
however I want. Is there any benefit to having a lower key ratio and a =
shorter knuckle to center pin distance versus a higher key ratio and a =
longer knuckle to center pin distance? Or is it six of one...?
See you in Reno.
