David, I recently lowered the plate of a K 52 s&s upright. I used the kerf of a saw blade to remove a small amount from the dowels. (I didn't remove the plate) Then I tried to bring the plate down by tightening the plate screws. Wouldn't go down. The rust was so bad, I couldn't turn the screws enough to pull the plate down. So, I removed them, raked them across a cake of bees wax and it worked fine. I don't know about the soap. Just wash your hands with it after your done.
