splicing bass strings

I agree, you should have no trouble splicing in the speaking length - just
don't go peeling copper windings off to make room!

Brian, I think Stephen wanted to splice because (I think) his piano is an
old upright and the strings are original and do not have their original bold
robust tone. If this is true, there can be the tone advantage to splicing
rather than replacement as the replacement may end up really sticking out
tonally with its big bold sound.
