My mentor taught me this method about 25 years ago. He referred to it as the
"Faust Method". Jon Travis outlines this method in his book "Guide To
Restringing". It opens the doors to a lot of checks, and once mastered you
can set a temperament very quickly. Normally my temperament octave starts
with C3 and ends on D#3. The poorly scaled pianos may give you some grief,
but in those cases, I estimate the F3-C4 interval and set the temperament
starting with F3. It will render a very nice tuning. If you have trouble
