scaling question

List,

Does anyone know the rational for decreasing both the wrapped and core
diameters for a the lowest two bass strung in a scale (relative to the
strings above that)?

I was taking measurements the other day on a 5'8" grand and found this
situation.  I checked another of the same model while tuning and found the
same thing.  When I stopped in at Schaff last week we checked the scale
stick and found the same thing.  In short, this is part of the design and no
just an error made by the string maker.

Any thoughts?
