Too much confusion ,and potential for misrepresentation can result from any changes. Also , many pianos, Steinway in particular , have the serial # in many places.---keyframe, keyslip ,lyre. I once ordered bass strings for a Steinway A, and got an incorrect set . Seems the piano was a German Steinway, " rebuilt" @ Steinway in N.Y. in the 40's and given a new serial number . I'm not sure how common this practice was but it was a lesson learned the hard way! Tom Driscoll.
