Possibly. For whatever reason it can be some difficult to get consistent
readings from a digital caliper. There is much more flex in the blades, add
in a bit of twist and there you are. Now, if you're used to doing these
measurements and getting good results, then who am I to argue? It's just
that often when I get a reading that seems odd -- as this one does -- with
the digital caliper and go back and check it with my trusty old
(mechanically) digital micrometer the mic gives a different reading. I trust
the mic.

The other answer, of course, is that the stringer grabbed the wrong size
wire. They do still use 12 1/2 wire for some inexplicable reason.
