I have one client that I am aware of that uses her sostenuto. But that
doesn't make it a bad thing. But yes, I do see your reasoning from a
benefit/cost standpoint quite clearly. Even on older junky grands, where you
an I both know that the sostenuto will never be used, I am tempted to just
rip all that garbage out of there and keep it simple! (Not that I would.)
But I have on a number of occassions recommended to old grand owners who
have said that the middle pedal doesn't work (or rather they ask what is it
for, I explain, and then inform them that theirs is not functioning), that
unless they are aware of their need for a properly functioning sostenuto,
they may elect to simply save a few bucks and leave the thing alone - I can
always jam a piece of felt on the back side of the pedal to hold it in the
resting position! Sad, but true.
