Hi Ed,
           One tip that I have found useful, research the date and location
of the temperament,  try it with the date and domicile region of the
composer and put the two together and try it.
1799, Volati/Young, Vienna, Beethoven.   Dramatic difference from ET.  Just
about all comments were positive.  With hell to pay in B flat.  <G>
