Bill,

Good questions. It continues to fascinate and amaze me how some folks make up their own version of a god and pray to that. How can that be rational? But the practice arises out of the idea that no one can really know who or what God is, so everyone is guessing anyway, and God is just a fairy tale like Santa Claus, tooth fairy, or the Easter bunny.

So as to what god is being talked about, it depends if you are speaking historically or currently. I believe if you do the research you will find that for most of the history of the United States you will find that the God being referred to is the God of the Holy Bible. Currently, it's a whole different ballgame for a lot of people.

Regards,
Clyde

Or is this another conversation where everyone uses the name "God", and each thinks that it that it's their own god being referred to. (Modern religions insist that there is only one God and if anyone else has a different name for God, it's only because they haven't learned the one true name and switched churches yet).
