Others have answered your questions, but I just wanted to put in a plug for a 
set of punches. We paid what seemed like a fortune for a set at a Tandy 
Leather store a couple of decades ago, and they have paid for themselves over 
and over again. We use them for making all sorts of miscellaneous felt, 
cloth, and leather punchings.
