Hi Ric,
             Glue is definitely undesirable here, you run the risk of
clicks and squeeks. Some older dampers have a centre pin and bushing cloth.
These I have drilled out the hole to accept the cord and new springs.  The
coils of the springs are sized for the cord. One of the few things that has
almost become an Industry standard.

Just my take on the subject.
