Attack, energy spectrum and decay characteristic. Take away the chaos at the
attack and the piano no longer sounds like a piano. Pick up any musical note
in the middle--for just a brief period of time--and it is difficult to
identify it.

That is the simple answer. The more complex answer will now be debated for
the next week....
